Last Winter

I went on a walk yesterday, but I didn't have anything particular that I thought about nor did I see anything that I wanted to take a picture of, so I decided to go to my picture log and choose something from there. I am including some pictures of the family cabin and a Scout overnight trip we made up there.

This first picture shows the bedding under the picnic table - the boys got to sleep outside and I was very surprised how well they did. I was pretty miserable myself at bed time, and I got to sleep inside the cabin.

This one shows a nice view of the front porch, indicating the amount of snow that had accumulated - note that it was a pretty light winter as far as snow fall in the area.

This third picture illustrates the trail that we plowed to get up to the cabin. The road in was packed down by snowmobiles, but the last 200 - 300 yards was virgin snow. We had snowshoes, but it was still quite a bit of work to make it up the trail.

Overall, I really had a fun time, but I remember that one moment when I thought "what am I doing up here int he middle of the winter, freezing cold".

When we parked in the evening, there was a team of snow sledding dogs. In the morning when we came back, they were there as well. I talked to the driver and he said that they had gone during the night up to Evanston and back; pretty crazy.

Friday February 7th 2014 Walk

I decided to come back to my much blog, and make a new attempt to add content each day.

Today I decided to go on a walk for a couple of specific reasons:

  • I have a goal of getting 1/2 hour of exercise in a day
  • My friend and manager has started walking for exercise and it brought it back to my mind
  • I wanted to get outside for a break
I have started writing again for a few more reasons:

  • I thought about it on this walk and saw something I wanted to take a picture of and write about
  • I love history and personal history, and I consider this part of it
  • I like to read other peoples views of things, and hope that I can bring something to someone else with my views
Today the walk was from my office, up to 100 south, over to 500 East, and back. As I was walking on 100 South, I saw a building on 400 East:

This looks like one of the "old style" LDS churches. I have had several conversations with friends and family about these, and I love them. I understand why the church builds the "cookie cutter" models now, but I greatly miss the unique building style and walking through them.

As I walked past this building, I thought that it would be nice to walk around it, and discover the uniqueness of it. Then I thought about the obstacles that there would be. Then I saw a sign that it will be a American Cancer Society Building in 2015.

I grew up going to a very unique LDS chapel and I loved it. There were so many cool features. I remember a spook alley for Halloween in the lower section, I remember begin frighted to go clean the erasers in a little room in the basement. I remember doing the rain gutter regatta as a cub scout in the upper floor. I remember the celebration of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in the summer of 1976 in that auditorium. Lots of fun memories - too many to include in this blog post.

I plan to talk more about these topics in future posts. Requests are always welcome.
